MWNM | The Box Game

Tonight at MWNM––The Box Game with Lukas Geronimas and David Horvitz

Saturday February 28 / 7-9PM / BYOB

Artists Lukas Geronimas and David Horvitz have created a transportable game-cum-installation entitled The Box Game. During the month of March, the duo will tour various venues throughout the United States and Canada to ask their audiences "What's in the box?" Both artists are currently pursuing their MFA degrees at Bard College.

DECEMBER 12 / MWNM

MWNM is pleased to announce the opening of 93 DAYS. 93 days is the span of time partners Karen Archey and Alice Wells were given to transform the storefront of 17 Orchard into an alternative exhibition space. The conditions that made this project possible are elucidated through an ongoing, self reflexive archive. The archive is an encompassing installation that serves to question the relevance of the increasingly popular alternative exhibition space and the problematic, constructed identity of the young artist and art professional. Other collaborators include Jon Rafman, William Bryan Purcell, Tim Ridlen and Bret Schneider.

The conclusion of MWNM is contingent upon the lease of its storefront, elucidating the relationship MWNM bears to the economy and real estate market, as well as personal variables that determine its longevity. 93 DAYS materialized as a solution to the obstacle of maintaining an exhibition space that is given an unpredictable duration. The archive will open Sunday, February 8th from 6 – 9, and run through March 1st with the possibility of extension.

This Friday Meet Waradise is Andres Laracuente + Julia Weist.

In Process is a temporary installation of incomplete, project-based works by Andres Laracuente and Julia Weist. The pieces on view are enriched by a shared notion of sculpture as an open process in which a work may be simultaneously unfinished and whole. Both artists are also invested in themes of transparency: Laracuente's piece is a receptive object and Weist's project is a documentary collection.

Meet Waradise

Andres Laracuente is a New York based artist working with video/film, performance and sculpture. He has presented works internationally at venues including White Box in New York, MIT in Cambridge, Projet Midi in Brussels, the National Gallery of Arts, Albania, and Yukiko Kawase in Paris.

Julia Weist is a New York based artist working primarily with sculpture and installation. By the age of 23, Julia Weist's experimental romance novel, Sexy Librarian, had been independently published by Ellen Lupton, Curator of Design at the Cooper Hewitt and was in the collection the of the MoMA Library, the Brooklyn Museum library, the Getty Institute, and the New York Public Library. Weist was educated at the Cooper Union School of Art and is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the NYAEA Artist Welfare Fund Prize. Her work has been featured in several recently published books and catalogs including "Indie Publishing" (Princeton Architectural Press) and "The Bruce High Quality Foundation & Other Ideas" (I.C. Editions). Weist has recently exhibited in New York City at Sara Meltzer Gallery, Oliver Kamm Gallery, The Kantor/Feuer Window, Autoversion LTD Gallery, The Center for Book Arts, The CSV Center, Anthology Film Archives, as well as international venues such as Galerie Nuke in Paris and the Copenhagen Quadrennial.

Photographer Fun with Fjord

Many a friend and, more importantly, many a notable artist can be found on the new Fjord, a site dedicated to young and emerging photographers. Familiar with many of the artists through my blogging days for Hey, Hot Shot!, it's quite the scene to find us all together in one well designed, easy to navigate, database.

Book bound, the new site is a launchpad for what is a larger and more ambitious project. Fjord's mission is to take what has become a tightly nit community online and translate it into a book with a capital 'B'. Oh what we have to look forward to!

From Fjord's mission statement:
The drastic shift in the way work is being presented today has become especially noticeable in the more technologically adept generation. Fjord's goal is to bring together a collection of notable photographers from the internet and showcase their work in book form. This transition from internet to book will allow a different audience to experience the work thus bringing emerging artists into the public's view.

It is beyond c-o-o-l to see such a considerable chunk of talent in one compact place and quite a complement to be included in such company. Gold stars to Grant Willing and Alana Celii for going the extra mile.
